Tips regarding mat care

Your personal yoga mat, as personal as your own toothbrush.

Remember; your beyondyoga mat is made from natural materials and is recyclable. It does not like UV light, otherwise it loses its color fastness, elasticity and dissolves in prana.

Due to the material used, natural rubber mats have an odor of their own when first opened. However, it will disappear after a short time and with regular use. Natural rubber mats need a moment to “break in”. With regular practice, the surface structure and your grip will be optimized. To speed up this process, the mat can be wiped several times with a damp cloth at the beginning and air dried (attention: avoid direct sunlight).

Basically, it is recommended to clean your mat after each practice in order to extend its lifespan. Spray the mat and wipe with a soft cotton cloth. It is important to let the mat surface dry before rolling it up again and storing it in a place protected from light.

Particularly important! Never clean your natural rubber mat with an alcohol-based cleaning agent. A suggestion for your personal yoga mat spray can be found below.

Make your own yoga mat spray

There are almost as many yoga mat sprays on the market as there are yoga mats themselves. However, you can easily, easily and inexpensively make your own yoga mat spray.

You need this:

  • 1 spray bottle 250ml
  • 250ml distilled water
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 10 drops of tea tree oil tea tree oil
  • 10 drops essential fragrance oil of your choice (e.g. lavender, frankincense, lemongrass)

Mix the water with the tea tree oil and vinegar. Tea tree oil has a slight antiseptic effect. On one hand, the vinegar dissolves dirt and, on the other hand, nourishes the natural rubber. Finally, you can give your yoga mat spray a personal touch with the scented oil of your choice. Make sure you choose 100% pure essential oils.

What can I do if my mat needs “deep cleaning”?

It is recommended not to wash the beyondyoga natural rubber mat in the washing machine, as this can shorten the life of the mat. If the mat is heavily soiled, shower it with plenty of water or spray it with a mixture (50% water / 50% vinegar) and rub it off. This process can be repeated several times. Then air-dry the mat, but avoid direct sunlight.
